Folding bike

Just in case anyone is curious about the bike and how it is packed.

Here's the bike and its accessories stowed in the suitcase (which is a standard Samsonite model). You can see the only tools necessary for the packing job up on the lid of the bag. The only parts that are removed are the pedals, handlebars, and wheels. Everything else simply folds up into a compact package.

Here's the same bag with about 10 days of riding clothes also packed in. Everything cycling related is in the bag except for my helmet.

And here's the bag, all closed up and ready for travel.

Pretty cool, eh? The suitcase provided by the company costs $150 more than the one I bought at my local luggage store, but it is exactly the same size (possibly exactly the same model?).

I find that packing my clothing around my folding bike is an extremely efficient way to protect the bike from damage in the suitcase. To keep my clothes clean, I pack them into several bags; it also makes it easier to remove the clothing later and prevents individual items from shifting too much while the bag is being jostled from travel.

As to the exact suitcase used, several of the bike makers use the Samsonite Oyster case. Personally, I prefer something soft sided that is expandable (in case I come back with some extra souvenirs, etc.). I've even flown with full size folding bikes like the Montague Paratrooper stored in a soft carry bag. For extra protection, I wrap the frame members in pipe insulation. It works pretty well.
